EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF STRATEGIC PLANNING ON ORGANIZATIONAL EFFICIENCY
A CASE STUDY OF JOHN HOLT PLC, LAGOS BRANCH
ABSTRACT
This research was on evaluating the impact of strategic on
planning on organizational efficiency, on John Holt Plc Lagos, Lagos State
which according to the background was quoted on the Nigeria stock exchange in
“May 1974 that comprise mainly on three makor department e.g. engineering,
startak, and Yamaha. A good numbers of business failed as a result of
ineffective planning and lack of sound staff development scheme that enable the
employees to contribute meaningfully to the goal of the organization more
effectively and efficiently. Strategic planning address the long term view of
an organization, it answers questions on like what is our core of business,
what is the core market, where do we want to be in the next 5 to 10yrs, the
prospects for growth in the business, and the threats and weaknesses that are
likely to face in the future. Look into the types of planning to adopt among
the planning method we have e.g. short term planning, long-term planning and
corporate planning for the organization to choose one among the three, the one
that will benefit them most at the end. But we have see that the organization
embark upon mostly on long term planning. Further more, this will take us to
the important of the above discussed topic to an organization. A well strategic
plans, help an organization to achieved it goals. The data collection used on
this research is questionnaire in order to get facts and figure of the above
organization. It was design in such a way that one would obtain the relevant
data needed from the respondents, as well s important details about the subject
matter of the discussion. It has been observed that the organization make use
of four types of training scheme to train their employees, on the job training,
off the training, internal course and job rotation. But on the job training and
job rotation are mostly used. It is designed to equip employees with tools of
their job and also to enhance their overall performance on the job.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
John
Holt came to Nigeria in 1961 the company was incorporated in Nigeria as John
Holt Limited. It became a public company and was quoted on the Nigeria stock
exchange in May, 1974. (symbol John Hoit).
The Logo of John Holt consists of a brass manila
previously used in some parts of Nigeria as currency and five-point star, which
signifies the group’s enduring connection with Liverpool (UK) it has it’s head
office at number 30 Kudirat Abiola way Ikeja Lagos. John Holt is a well
–established name in Nigeria and has been an important participant in many
areas of the economy their interest are managed in the following operating
divisions.
Technical products and leasing.
Services, comprise of John Holt Engineering and startek. John
Holt engineering, the unit specializes in sales and maintenance of large power
generating sets. The exclusive distributor of FG Wilson. While startek unit of
John Holt provide professional lease and financing arrangement to enable
organizations meet their equipment and machinery needs. Another unit of John
Holt which is distribution unit, is a dominant player in the distribution of
wide range of consumer and light industrial goods, which is John Holt venture
that has a very wide distribution network, that undertakes merchandising and
redistribution depot services. The group head office is responsible for the
management of the groups portfolio and properties across the country, central
purchasing functions, insurance, finance, information technologies, human
resources development, legal and statutory matters, the company remains
committed to making sure the employees are adequately remunerated and that they
work in the most rewarding environment. The annual appraisal process identifies
training and development needs for each employee. The annual training
programmes are designed to meet these needs and in the regard, extensive
training programmes including internal and external course are carried out.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It is obvious that business cannot perform very well, if its
work force is not properly planned, developed, and fully put inro use.
A good number of business failed as a result ineffective
planning and lack of sound staff development scheme that would enable the
employees to contribute meaningfully to the success of the organization.
The study
is meant to determine the impact of poor strategic planning on organization.
Efficiency. This is one of the reasons whys some business do not perform
efficiency and efficiently well.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this research study are obvious despite the
high volume of existing literature on the contribution of good staff planning
to a business organization. The following are some of its objective.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of the study is to enumerate the Loopholes
of management of organization in harnessing the available resources in the
right direction in order to achieve the desired goals. Management of
organization has been consistently undermining these problems which are
characterized by poor strategic planning on organizational efficiency.
Essentially, the research work is out to provide the
necessary guides to the management of various organization to make right
decision on the need to effectively plan, develop and fully utilize it work
force so as to achieve the desired objective
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research will cover the impact of strategic planning on
organizational efficiency in improving organization productivity.
The
research is carried out in order to find out the general policies of John Holt
Plc, Lagos branch toward staff planning and development, it makes the research
reliable and result oriented people, journal, textbooks and the field will be
consulted.
1.6 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
This project is well organized and divided into five (5)
chapters. Each of the chapter is very important to this research work.
Chapter one of this research, which is an introduction
comprises of background to the study, statement of the problem, objectives of
the study, significance of the study, scope of the study, organization of the
study and definition of the concepts.
Chapter two of this research examine the review of relevant
literature. Here extensive work is done on the meaning of strategic planning on
organizational efficiency, types of planning, types of training scheme, human
needs in an organization, employees compensation and important of strategic
planning.
Chapter three of the research taken a look at the research
methodology, it includes research design, research population and samples,
methods of data collection, administration of instruments and problem of
methodology.
Chapter four of this research, which is data presentation and
analysis, presentation of data, analysis data, test of hypothesis and
discussion of finding.
Chapter five offers summary, conclusion and recommendations
of the subject matter.
Appendix and bibliography.
1.7 DEFINITION OF THE CONCEPTS
To enhance easy and better comprehensive and understanding,
the following terms, which run through the lengths and breath of this research,
will be briefly defined.
Evaluating:- Means the ability to access and bring about the intended
result, to achieve the desire objectives.
Strategic Planning:- It is the central instrument for directing and
co-ordinating the company strategic efforts and activities, in which an
organization and strategic decision makers intend to implement the chosen
strategies.
Efficiency:- Refers to as the effort being put into plans to achieve the
needed goal
