THE CAUSES OF
INDUSTRIAL CONFLICT IN PRIVATE ORGANIZATION
ABSTRACT
Conflict has become a very big organizations. To take
this conflict problem, the researcher picked up the topic “the causes and
effect of industrial conflict in organization” with specific focus on Globacom Nigeria Abuja
Branch to achieve this, the researcher used a questionnaire method of data
collection in order to elicit relevant information from the study elements.
From the data collected and analyzed, it was discovered that demand for
improvement in the working condition leads to conflict in private
organizations. Base on the above, it is recommended that management should
negotiate with their workers at the appropriate time to avoid any strict
action. This will help to a great extent in improving the situation by curbing
the conflict problems and encourage collective bargaining mechanism.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Conflict
is a part of private organizational life and may occur with an individual. It
also exist between groups while conflict is generally perceived or seen as been
dysfunctional, it can also be beneficiary because it may give opportunity to
people to analyze issues in different perspectives.
One time
executive of an institution mentioned that, where there are no conflicts or an
issue, it could not have been sufficiently analyzed and to find decision on the
issue was usually postponed until and aspect were critically evaluated.
There
are many sources of conflict today, most establishment are characterized by
complex relationship and a high degree of interdependence of task that causes
frictions (conflict).
There
are pressures to conform with, which may stifle an atmosphere for conflict
resolution and highly structured power relationship tends op emerge rapidly.
Though conflict is inevitable, we should find some possible means to reduce or
avoid it for the smooth running (operation) and co-existence in the private
organizations.
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
A
private organization comprises of so many actors, the employers or labour
employers or management and the state or government. Between these actors
conflict arise of which many authors have written on the causes of industrial
problem or conflict in private organization and many articles are written the
same problem are found in Nigeria Newspaper magazines OGWU (2003).
According
to B. Flippo (1980) in his book panel management analyzed that “Despite the
best management practice in acting and communicating” conflict between the
employees in private organization will occur. The total absence of conflict
would be unbelievable loving and sound suppressed.
One of
the characteristic of mature group is
its willingness and ability to bring supposed conflicts to the surface where
they may be discussed with a greater opportunity of resolution. It would be
nice to insist that all conflicts can be eliminated in some manner or other but
their exposure and discussion will contribute greatly toward their reduction.
So conflicts per se is neither bad nor contrary to good private organization.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
An industrial
conflict is today known to have unhealthy effect on private organizations. Some
people in our society or institutions are willingly aiding and abetting
industrial conflicts and unmindful of the harm they are causing to thousands of
workers who are already employed and several others who are to take up job some
day.
How ill
management feel when no one (employee or labour) comes up to be employed in any
private organization for fear of conflict in such private organizations. It is
a source of insecurity for them and a room that may boomerang on our private
organizations.
The
above and many other problems make the research necessary.
1.3 OBJECTIVE
OF THE STUDY
Industrial
conflict is today described as a very serious problem. It is one that had for
long time now disturbed the welfare of the employed applicants and the
management. This has far rehing conservancies on the different industrial
techniques and the individual in particular and society in general.
So many
scholars have tried to research an effective means of achieving industrial harmony
in every organization, but due to divergent
objectives of the various actors in organization. As we
know productivity will nose dive in the presence of conflict, so the parties
involve should advance a meeting point were all the various interest can be
harmonies for the realization of industrial goal and objective.
Social
scientists, government and management are also engaged in the cry against
industrial conflict. No one has successfully come out with a statement on its
causes. The researcher is therefore going to take close look at the problems of
industrial conflict, what causes it, and its effect on private organization and
suggest possible solutions to the problem.
THE OBJECTIVE COULD
BE SPECIFIED AS FOLLOWS:
i. To provide solution in form of suggestion
and suggestions to industrial conflict.
ii. To examine causes and effect of industrial
conflict
iii. To identify the effect of industrial
conflict on the realization of goal
iv. Why do we have industrial conflict in
organization
v. To make recognition for improvement
vi. What form does it take in an industry.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE STUDY
With the
emergence of white cola job, the employers of labour have had to content with
the provision of a conducive environment for work despite this, industrial conflicts have
continued unabated, carrying out a research work on industrial conflict causes
and remedies will be a gold mine for employers, students and practitioners in
the act of conflict management.
Furthermore,
this research work is significant to the extend that if will contribute to our

1.5 STUDY QUESTION
The
questions to be considered at this cause of these work are as follows:
1. Has employee motivation made any positive
impact on the reduction of conflict in private organization?
2. has suppression really been a good weapon
for conflict resolution in private organization?
3. Can the leadership style used in the
organization contribute positively to the reduction of conflict in private
organizations?
1.6 SCOPE AND
LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The
scope of this research is the causes and effects of industrial conflicts in
private organizations not general but specific to Globacom Nigeria Limited, Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja.
As it
has earlier been mentioned, industrial conflict is a common problem shared
among many private organizations, especially or present private organization.
It would therefore have been thought best that one should collect data from
other private organizations to raise a sound project, however the problem of
finance would not allow us to go round. There is also the problem of time as
the project is expected to be completed and submitted within a giving period of
time which is not sufficient for a thorough work (The period of the study
should cover 2002 -2010).
