Barriers to Efficiency in Energy Consumption
Barriers to Energy Efficiency Development in Nigeria as outlined by E. Uyigue, et al, (2009), are as follows;
- Lack of Policy and Legislation: Lack of policy and legislation to address the inefficient use of energy is a very key barrier to the development of energy efficiencies
- Lack of Awareness: Uyigue, et al (2009), claimed that From study done, many respondents were familiar with the term “energy efficiency”, 68% of respondents claimed that they are familiar with the term.
- Lack of Trained Personnel and Energy Efficiency Professionals: Inadequate trained personnel and professional is also a factor inhibiting the development of energy efficiencies.
- Importation of Used Machines: the wide spread of imported second-hand appliances may hinder the use of efficient appliances.
- Lack of Research Materials on Energy Efficiency: There is lack of research materials and data that will guide the development of policy that will strengthen the efficient use of energy.
- Inefficient Metering System and Low Electricity Pricing: The metering system in Nigeria is very inefficient and does not encourage consumers to pay the correct amount for the energy they consume.
- Proliferation of Inefficient Equipment and Desire to Minimize Initial Cost: The desire to minimize initial cost force many consumers to purchase cheap and inefficient appliances.
- Low income: About 70% of Nigerians live below the poverty line of $2 per day. Many are not able to afford the cost of efficiency appliances which are sometime more expensive than the less efficient ones”.
