PROSPECTS OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TO SECRETARIES

To say the world is changing rapidly is an understatement. The average smart phone today has more processing capacity than the entire brain box of the first spaceship that landed on the moon.  Information and Communication Technology is growing with dynamism. The technological advancement witnessed in the recent years has posed a great deal of opportunities to professional Secretaries.

The advancement in the office technologies have provided for professional Secretaries a new carrier path coupled with opportunities for decision making in application of Information and Communication Technology.

The following prospects/ opportunities offered to Secretaries by Information and Communication Technology as stated by Muhammed,(2007) and Quist (2002).

v   The new electronic Equipment will allow secretaries to spend less time typing and more time doing work that once burdened the executive. The Secretary makes use of the computer and other office automation to achieve this.

v   The Secretary will do more of the preliminary research and analysis on any problem.

v   Separate work for location. It is now possible to organize globally while working. Information and Communication Technologies such as e-mail, internet, and video-conferencing permits tight coordination of geographically, workers across time zones and cultures.

v    Information and Communication Technologies have being progressively replacing manual work procedure with automated work procedures, work flows and work processes.  Electronic work flows have reduced the cost of operation in many organizations that is engaged in the use of ICT by displacing bulky paper and manual routines that accompany it.

v   The Changing Management Process. Information and Communication Technology is recasting the process of management, providing powerful new capabilities to help Secretaries plan, organize and control. It is now possible for secretaries to obtain Information on Organizational performance down to the level of specific transaction from anywhere within and outside the organization at any time. As such many organization now use Information and Communication Technology for Enterprise resource Planning (ERP) – a business management software –typically a suite of integrated applications that a company can use to collect, store, manage and interpret data from many business activities such as marketing and sales, inventory management and shipping and payment so as to become more closely coordinated by.
