THE IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP ON ORGANIZATION EFFICIENCY
(A CASE STUDY OF OKENE LOCAL GOVERNMENT)
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
An organization is normally established
with certain objectives to achieve. To achieve objectives. Both
individual employers and management or leader does most strive hard.
However, the one is one is on the organizational leadership. The
leadership or an organization must strive hard to harmonize all the
interacting activities to achieve common objectives.
More importantly, what is required is
not a leader but a leader who is fit, transparent, honest, dynamic,
confident, competent and visionary.
Such leader should be able to take
rational decision at all times he should be considerate and
understanding. He should be able to organize human, materials and
financial resources effectively and efficiently. He should ensure that
both individual and organizational needs are harmonize.
This aimed at facilitating peaceful
co-existence among members of the organization. However in many
organizations most of these qualities are not existing in their
leadership behaviour. This is why most organization are collapsing. It
is clearly seen that the researcher is carrying out the impact of
leadership on organization efficiency using Okene Local Government as a
case study.
1.2 STATEMENT OF STUDY
The problems of many organization have
been traced to leadership, most organization have not got leaders that
are sound, dynamic, competent, transparent, confident and rational. This
has led to the collapse or failure of most organizations in Nigeria.
Okene local government has tried to
reasonable extent in its leadership ability, however when compared with
other local government areas in the state. According to the study, Okene
Local Government has tried immensely, especially the incumbent leaders
who has put more efforts to see that the crises in Okene stop which
obviously work out and other issues like provision of infrastructure
facility, adequate security. These successes was achieve by the
co-operation of the government leaders, traditional leader’s and other
organizational leaders. There is still room for improvement. Therefore
this study is required to carryout and examine the impact of leadership
on organization efficiency using Okene local government as a case study.
1.3 THE OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
The primary objectives of this study is
to investigate on the impact of leadership on organizational
performance. However the following specific objectives will be achieved.
- This study hopes to examine the meaning and nature of leadership.
- To identify the specific role of leadership to their organization.
- To Analyze the various policies and characters expected of leaders in organization.
- To identify the various types of leadership in existence and the one practical in Okene local government area.
- To identify various motivational theories available in an organization (Okene Local Government).
- To examine the achievement or leadership in Okene local government especially from the second republic to date.
1.4 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
Leadership is a vital aspect in
organizational growth and development without effective leader’s needing
can be done in an organization.
The study is intended to provide an
answer’s to various questions that border’s on the impact of effective
leadership in an organization. The outcome of this will help people in
managerial position to become conscious of their role as the propelling
force towards development and growth in an organization.
The identification of problems that
militate against impact of leadership will help the present and future
leaders to have a choice on whether to be a poor leaders or to be an
effective leader in an organization.
The study will not only be very
important to the researcher alone, but most importantly to who may wish
to carry out research in similar area and the society in general.
1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY
The scope of this study is hoped to cover the following areas:-
- The meaning and nature of leadership.
- The role of leadership in an organization.
- The polices and characteristic of leadership expected in an organization.
- The various types of leadership that can exist in an organization.
- To evaluate the achievement of Okene local government from the second republic up to date.
The scope of this is limited to above
areas because of some certain constrain among which are: finance, time,
statistical data in co-operation from others.
1.6 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Research question are the types of
question that may be asked in the course of carrying out research in a
certain organization. The questions are:-
- Is leadership the bane of organization efficiency?
- Are the leaders in Okene local government always honest and transparent?
- Are leaders in Okene local government autocratic?
- Why is it that leaders are so much involve in corruption?
- Is the relationship between the leaders and their subordinate cordial?
- How often do you hold departmental meetings?
- Do you contribute during meetings?
1.7 DEFINITION OF THE RELATED TERMS
Let us now look at the key word in the
topic understudy, by explaining them one alter the other. They are
effectiveness, leaderships and organization.
EFFECTIVENESS: Effectiveness
is of vital importance in this study. A leader productive is measured
can direct, control and discipline the works to achieve the self goals
or desire.
LEADERSHIP: A leader is
he who has the ability to job willingly. Leaderships is also defined as
the ability to inspire others towards the attainment of common
objectives or goal.
ORGANIZATION: It is an act of organizing the body of put society with the a define structure are on good.
